“Reconnecting Youth” Anti-Drug Campaign at Musaliar College of Engineering and Technology

On November 1, 2024, the Pathanamthitta division of Kerala’s Excise Department, in collaboration with the District Legal Service Authority and Musaliar College of Engineering and Technology (MCET), organized an impactful program titled “Reconnecting Youth.” Held at 10:00 AM in the college auditorium, the event was a dedicated anti-drugs campaign aimed at educating youth on the risks of substance abuse and promoting a drug-free lifestyle.
The program began with a warm welcome address by Advocate Jose Kaleekkal, District Coordinator of the Vimukthi Mission. Prof. Sarath Raj, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronics at MCET, delivered the presidential address, emphasizing the significance of the campaign in fostering awareness and resilience among students.
Smt. Beena Gopal, Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, formally inaugurated the event. The keynote address was delivered by Sri Robert V, the Excise Deputy Commissioner of Pathanamthitta, who spoke passionately about the detrimental effects of drug abuse on individuals and society at large. He emphasized the role of youth in building a healthy, drug-free community.
Following the keynote, a highly informative session was led by Shri Anish M.R., Program Officer with the District Mental Health Program in Pathanamthitta. His session covered various topics, including the dangers of drug misuse, the addictive nature of substances like alcohol and tobacco, and their harmful effects on physical and mental health. He also highlighted the severe impact of substance abuse on families and communities, fostering a deeper understanding among the students.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks from K.M. Shahabuddin, Excise Inspector of Pathanamthitta. Prof. Merllin Ann George effectively compered the event, ensuring the program flowed seamlessly from one segment to the next.
“Reconnecting Youth” was a successful initiative that empowered students with knowledge and insight into the severe consequences of substance abuse. It highlighted the importance of making informed choices and highlighted the critical need for youth involvement in creating a drug-free society.
